Updates 2012

Why is everyone who drives slower than me an idiot, and everyone who drives faster a maniac?

Archived Updates: 2004; 2005; 2006; 2007; 2008; 2009; 20102011;

  • I decided to take the plunge and try out a 'no rinse' car soap from Optimum Polymer Technologies.  I think it was worked well, and worth using again.  Details ;o) in Wash & Wax.
  • Uploaded additional pictures.

  • A month or so ago I noticed the LED city light on the passenger side had stopped working.  Earlier  this week I finally got around to having it looked at along with a scheduled service.  My initial thought was that the fault lay with the wiring I had done (professionally) to make the city lights work like DRLs, because a couple years ago the wiring had come 'loose' causing the light to fail.  This time, however, it turned out the LED had actually died.   I ended up replacing the LEDs on both headlights because the old LED on the drivers side was noticeably dimmer than the new ones.

  • Long time between updates, eh?  I uploaded the final fuel consumption data for 2011.  As always, fuel consumption for previous years, and 2012, can be found on R32 information
    • It looks like I'm fairly close to VW's estimate (19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway).  The 18-19 mpg I'm averaging is a mix of city-highway, however.  Pure city driving the R32 might only get 13-15 mpg.  Hundred percent highway driving I have no issues with achieving 26-27 mpg.
  • Slightly worrisome, is that recently my R32 bogged down during acceleration from a rolling start.  I think I was in 1st gear, but it might have been 2nd.  Don't believe I hit the rev limiter, either.  It only happened once, and I haven't been able to replicate it.  I hope it's compeletely unrelated to the APR Stage I ECU upgrade.
  • Hard to believe I've been driving my R32 for eight years, now.  It boggles my mind.  Has it really been that long?  While the R32 may have picked up a few cosmetic flaws over the years, I think I've kept it in pretty good shape.  My biggest concern these days, from living in southern Ontario, is worrying about salt and/or rust damage the R32 might be accumulating hidden from view.  My R32 is mostly a weekender, these days, and during the winter I try to rinse off the salt regularly, but you never know.
